After reading Brianna Flavin’s, What I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me Before Becoming a Graphic Designer, I can relate to most of the topics she discusses throughout her blog. I do not have much experience in the graphic design world, considering I opened my first Adobe program just three and a half years ago, but the few months I have worked for my school I have learned a lot. For example, not every project I was assigned was fun and creatively challenging, but that’s just part of the job. I have also noticed that often people who are not artists themselves do not appreciate the time and energy spent on a project; which is why I learned to show my creative process. I find the best part of this industry is the collaboration with other peers or co-workers to create the most successful. I love getting a fresh pair of eyes to look at my working projects because everyone has different ideas, styles, and approaches in design. I also love how there are so many paths a graphic designer could take within the industry; which is why I picked going to school for it. I wanted a career that had the opportunities to learn more and challenge my creative side. Although it can be stressful and frustrating at times, graphic design is what I what to do for the rest of my life.

The article, How to Create a Brand Style Guide, by Shirley Chan, discusses the elements needed to create the perfect branding bible. My brand is fairly simple for two reasons; (1) I did not want my brand to distract from my portfolio projects, (2) I wanted it to match my simple and clean design style. I decided to only involve one spot color of mint green and a simple dot texture. The graphic elements are green boxes, dots, dot boxes, and black outlined boxes. This also matches the logo I have designed because it is a smooth element of my initials on top of a green box. This article points out that I need a branding guide, which I do not have right now. The six elements of branding style are brand story, voice, logo, imagery, typography, color palette. The branding book specifies how to use a logo on different platforms and how other graphic elements should be used. I would consider my brand to be clean, simple, and slightly girly (with the colors and texture).

As of right now I have 5 completed projects in my portfolio. I think my favorite project is The Groomery Supply and my personal brand logo. I believe my logo is very resolved and is just a nice mark to look at. I love how the roundness of my letterform interacts with the plain green square in the background. My logo is also fairly square which makes it easier to design around it and fit it into any forms like letterheads, resumes, and another branding items. I also loved my Groomery Supply project that I created this semester. I created this project because I wanted to display my illustrative talent without creating a whole new portfolio. So this project I can say I brainstormed, concepted, illustrated, and designed all by myself. This demonstrates my wide range of abilities in design too because it has a branding section, packaging section, and an advertisement section.
